It’s been a while, but here we are. DC’s Dark Knights Metal officially kicks off today (it’s gonna go fast, grab it while you can.) Marvel continues it’s omage to Jack Kirby with some more True Believers reprints, along with their fast selling Generations series. A relatively slow week for comic fans, but the offerings we do have this week are delicious.

BREAKING NOW!

Josh Brolin has reportedly signed a four picture deal to play Cable in Deadpool 2.

Is it real? Brolin most recently came to the big screen as Eddie Mannix in last year’s Hail, Caeser!  Comic book fans will know him from the multiple MCU films as the mad Titan Thanos.

The highly talked topic of “Who will play Cable?” started with the credits scene from the first Deadpool film. The tease issued by none other than Deadpool himself.

Cable, also known as Nathan Summers, is the child of Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Madelyne Pryor (a clone of Jean Grey), who was transported into the future as an infant. For years Cable popped in and out of Marvel’s main continuity and timeline. In 2004 Cable was paired with Deadpool in Cable & Deadpool. Their polar opposite personalities has made Cable a constant inside of Deadpool comics ever since. While the characters have a hilarious and sometimes violent chemistry, the two are often depicted and expected together. Such was the case with Deadpool in 2016.

The biggest news here isn’t necessarily Cable’s casting. If Brolin does appear as Cable, he will be the first actor to appear in both the FMU and the MCU simultaneously. I know, it’s shocking. FOX’s history of being unwilling to accept any sort of agreement with Marvel Entertainment has caused quite a rift between the two companies. If Brolin signed a four picture deal, will he still be allowed to appear in the MCU?

This story will continue to draw attention as it unfolds.

With the mid-credits scene from Deadpool, fans of the Merc with the Mouth are going crazy. They certainly should be, a tease of Cable in Deadpool 2 got me pumped up too. The biggest question is, who should play Cable.

Following Deadpool’s release, hundreds of possibilities have been suggested, and several actors are actively campaigning for the role. To be perfectly clear, Fox has not settled on a single actor. However, one particular actor has recently been ruled out for sure. That actor is none other than Bloodline‘s Kyle Chandler, and it seems that director Tim Miller is departing with Chandler.

Miller had not been officially attached to the project, but it was considered a given considering Deadpool‘s box office performance. The departure comes as a result of a dispute between Miller and Deadpool star, Ryan Reynolds. Miller had picked Chandler to play as the more stoic and serious Cable, AKA Nathan Summers. Reynolds disagreed and the dispute went before FOX who ultimately sided with Reynolds. Whether or not anything more occurred in the dispute is unclear. However, Miller has gone on record to say that the decision has not strained relations between him and FOX. The personal and professional relationship between Reynolds and Miller have not been commented upon. Nor has the names of any of Ryan Reynolds picks or suggestions. But, speculations give us a pretty long list. We don’t have time to look at all of the candidates, but we can look at the most likely.

DC continues it’s unraveling of their universe with Rebirth and it would seem, for the most part, Civil War II is in a cease fire this week with only three tie-ins releasing. Meanwhile, IDW continues to take a page out of DC’s book with an incredible amount of releases. This week’s releases are rather tame compared to normal, a few hot titles but overall it’s pretty quiet. Let’s change that!

Civil War II and Rebirth are still going at it strong. Marvel dominated for the month of June with 40.08% of the market. DC came in second with 29.93%, and Image has their 7.88% market share in a kung fu grip. However, DC is grabbing up unit sales and is rapidly becoming a threat to Marvel with only a 12.48% difference in units sold! Not surprising is the fact that seven of the top ten issues in June, were DC titles. DC also has a firm grip on trade paper backs for June, taking five out of the top ten TPB’s for the month. In a world where Marvel has dominated for the past few years, DC seems to be on track to dethrone the reigning king.

This week, the publishers are giving us a shining example of what comics have to offer. No matter what you’re into, there’s a book out there for you. There’s quite a few out there for me. So…………
