Welcome back to The Nerdery, I’m JD. You’ve all heard me say that hundreds of times. However, today isn’t the same.

Welcome to Texas, we are all The Nerdery.

I’m sure you’ve all seen the devastation left behind by hurricane Harvey. You’ve watched celebrities donate millions of dollars to the Red Cross. And as good of an organization as it is, the Red Cross won’t rebuild homes or supply a permanent solution to the thousands of families who have lost everything. Once the flood waters subside and the shelters close, people will be returning to their homes to try and piece their lives back together. We as a national community need to step up and help.

Over the nearly four years of running The Nerdery, I’ve had the privilege of meeting some of the greatest artists, writers and publishers from the comic book industry. I ask for interviews and quotes politely. I take great care not to be pushy or ask for anything other than time or an autograph. Today I’m asking, urging and begging for something more.

The Nerdery will be holding a charity auction for comics, autographs, posters, prints, Pops and more. I’m asking for all of our friends, stores, writers, artists and publishers to donate what you can. One hundred percent of all profits will be directly donated to multiple relief funds that use funds to make a direct impact for those affected in Houston, Rockport, Corpus Christi and other areas. such as Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund, Texas Diaper Bank, Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce and the Foundation Beyond Belief: Hurricane Harvey Recovery.

I’m not going to call anyone out by name, but you all know who you are. I ask and urge all of you to donate whatever you can to this cause. Any memorabilia you may be willing to contribute is greatly appreciated. This is no scam. The Nerdery isn’t around to make profits, and to prove that, we are opening the vault and it will be auctioned off. I will also be going through my personal collection and will be contributing to this cause.

Just remember, not all heroes where capes. We spend our time and money collecting, reading, watching and fantasizing about fictional heroes. Now, we all have a chance to be one. Every contributor will be listed on our website and on future episodes of The Nerdery Live.

I want to give a huge thank you to all of our first responders and volunteers out there making a difference in the lives of strangers.

For those wishing to donate or would like more information, please contact me directly at theprez@thenerdery.net

Houston local donations will be accepted at Captain Jack’s Elixers 322 East Texas Avenue Baytown, TX 77520
Publishers, retailers and artists, please contact The Nerdery President, Jonathan Hardin at Theprez@thenerdery.net to arrange a donation method that bests suits you.

Charities that will receive these funds:

Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund
Texas Diaper Bank
Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce
Foundation Beyond Belief: Hurricane Harvey Recovery
JJ Watt Foundation

It’s been a while, but here we are. DC’s Dark Knights Metal officially kicks off today (it’s gonna go fast, grab it while you can.) Marvel continues it’s omage to Jack Kirby with some more True Believers reprints, along with their fast selling Generations series. A relatively slow week for comic fans, but the offerings we do have this week are delicious.

There’s a lot going on in the world right now; North Korean Tensions, Syria, NHL Playoffs, and everything else. I find my escape in comics. With genres ranging from horror and suspense to superheroes and alternate realities, there’s a title out there just for you.

Image has a series of April Fool’s variant covers that are hilarious, DC and Marvel are releasing a series of trades this week, and Eclipse comes back to put us on the edge of our seats.

Alright, the polls are closed and you have chosen the Best of 2016. Some of these results were really close. We had to bring in a tie breaker on more than a few of these categories. But, 2016 was a great year for nerds and 2017 looks to be an even better one.

Without any more bantering, here’s the results of the Best of 2016 Poll!!!

All Batman readers are familiar with the infamous The Killing Joke one shot. For those that aren’t, here’s a little background for you.

Released in March 1988, Alan Moore shattered everyone’s expectations of how dark a comic book villain can be. The book has received both heavy criticism and an abundance of praise. This is the story that crippled Barbara Gordon and cemented the relationship between Batman and the Joker. The Killing Joke has been called one of the best and darkest superhero comic books of all time.

For years, fans have been begging for an on-screen adaptation. We’ve asked specifically for a Mark Hamill (yes, in case you didn’t know, Luke Skywalker is the voice of the Joker) and Kevin Conroy portrayal. We, as fans, have suggested the project be placed into the unfailing hands of Bruce Timm.

Our begging and pleading did not fall on deaf ears. Last night, The Nerdery was joined by CasterQuest and the Nerdy Bitches at a screening of the The Killing Joke. The screening was preceded by Mark Hamill reminiscing his journey from Star Wars to the Joker and from the animated series to The Killing Joke. His recollections of the love of the character and the conflict to his wholesome character in Star Wars are funny and informative and help settle the audience down before the feature.

The film is followed by an in depth look at the musical score. Titled “Madness Set to Music” the feature takes us deep into composing the perfect music that can manipulate the senses of the watcher. The short documentary also takes us behind the the scenes for the Joker’s big musical number, ” I Go Looney ”

It’s that time of year, I guess. Rumors, confirmations, allegations, myths, and speculations are running absolutely wild. It’s rumored that Netflix has optioned Marvel’s Punisher for a stand-alone series. It’s confirmed that Voltron is getting a television reboot. It’s speculated that the third Star Wars Anthology movie will be about Boba Fett (this columnist really hopes this one turns out to be correct). It’s a myth that Fred Rogers, AKA Mister Rodgers, was in the military (he spent his entire working career in television). Okay, that last one was for my own humor.
