What’s Out Wednesday 10/28/15

It’s a relatively sleepy week in comics this Wednesday. Outside of ongoing titles, nothing Earth-shattering. We do have word that Think Tank will release today, which would fit in nicely with last week’s issue of The Tithe. But, that conflicts with other release dates we’ve received here at The Nerdery. Marvel brings Blade back into the fold. It’ll be interesting to see how this new Blade fits in to the new Marvel universe. Fight Club 2 rages on, and so do many other great titles. So, maybe this week won’t be so sleepy after all.

The Luke You’re Looking For

First of all, in case you haven’t seen the new trailer, watch below.

Now, a lot of fans are asking “Where’s Luke Skywalker?”

There’s several theories as to the answer for that. So, lets entertain a few.

Exile

One theory is that Luke is in exile by his own hand. Having contributed to his fathers death, the assassination of the Emperor, and revealing the truth about their heritage to Leia, exile seems to be a possibility. Surely these actions would incur some very dramatic reactions from Leia, the remains of the Empire, and the rest of the Rebel Alliance as well. Not to mention the sheer emotional impact of witnessing his long-lost father die. Exile appears to be a very viable option.

Evil

Another theory speculates that Luke has turned to the Dark Side. Several of the post-ROTJ books have illustrated this possibility. Now, before you start writing us nasty emails, hear me out. The Sith lord we see in the trailer is very Vader-esque in appearance. That’s not much to go on considering he is a Sith but, consider his hands are covered, as is his face. We know that Mark Hamill is in the film, but all we have seen of him is one blurry leaked photo of him in Jedi robes, and the glimpse of his hand on R2-D2 while the rest of him remained cloaked in a black hood. All of these things give the Sith theory traction.

Get Ready

This next theory has definitely gained the biggest following, but your’s truly is in complete disagreement. The theory is that Abrams is saving Luke for later films. With the huge price tag of $200 million this movie is already carrying, it would seem overly cautious to not use Luke. The lack of set photos with Hamill assuredly puts extra weight on this theory. However, the return of the original cast is putting a lot of fan power behind this trilogy, to not capitalize on that could be potentially dangerous. Still, they may be saving him for later movies. We all know how J.J. Abrams likes to build up to things. If The Force Awakens only has glimpses of him, that could increase fan turnout due to anticipation.

What’s Out Wednesday 10/21/2015

Let me begin by saying, WELCOME BACK DOC AND MARTY!!!!! For those of you who aren’t aware, Back To The Future is hitting the racks today. The irony of that is today’s date, Oct 21, 2015. That’s right the DeLorean delivered them right on time. For more on it’s release click here.

That being said, things are definitely ramping up all over this week. 1872, Shattered Empire, The Tithe, Prometheus, and a ton of other Nerdery favorites are hitting the rack. If you’re on a budget, you’re going to have a hard time choosing what to buy this week. Secret Wars is winding down and the new Marvel universe is getting more underway. DC is rocking the DCYOU in ways we never imagined. As more DC titles begin, we’re all curious how they will fit in the new universe. Top Cow and Image bring us The Tithe #6 and Tales of Honor: Bred to Kill #3. These two are Nerdery fav’s, and The Tithe has received the 5-5-5 top rating from us. There’s so much more I wish I could say, but alas, my time is up. Get out there and get your fix.

What’s Out Wednesday!!! 10/14/2015

Things are definitely heating up this week. Marvel adds another title to it’s Star Wars collection with Chewbacca #1, and backing it up with Shattered Empire #3. Some of the post-Secret Wars titles are also starting to show their presence. Marvel also continues it’s cosplay covers, which have gotten a lot of following. DC continues their monster variant covers and adds another Superman title this week, Lois and Clark. To end DC’s celebration of Green Lantern’s 7th anniversary, a special issue drops this week dedicated to the history of our favorite emerald knight. In addition, DC is making the Convergence tie-ins available in hardback form. Divided into two books, these collect all of the two issue Convergence side stories. We are also seeing a growing trend of smaller publishers grabbing for a piece of the pie. From Avatar to Vertical, small private publishers have developed quite the niche on today’s comic book racks. With a great deal of these dealing with “capeless” main characters put into extraordinary situations, writing tends to be top notch and very captivating. So everyone be on the lookout, don’t judge a comic by it’s cover.

What’s Out Wednesday 10/7/15

It’s been a non-stop month for comic releases. Drive #2 stalled and got pushed to this week, Telos finally makes it to the DC racks again with his own title, and Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens Shattered Empire #2 finally shows it’s face. DC also begins it’s monster variant covers, while on the other side of the fence Marvel Secret Wars rages on with Secret Wars #6. The BIG news this week is the postcard retailers received with their weekly shipment.

Retailers received the above postcard this week with their scheduled shipment. The back had the simple roman numeral ” II “, and Spring 2016. What this leads one to believe is fairly obvious, Marvel is planning a second Civil War. What will come from this? It’s really hard to tell. Rest assured, we will keep you updated as this develops.

THE THINK TANK OF CREATIVE DESTRUCTION

While at Comicpalooza this year, I had the privilege of meeting my favorite comic book writer, Matt Hawkins. I did get a video interview, but, the audio was very poor and in great need of editing. However, The Nerdery made a great friend that day and were introduced to far more of Matt’s works including Think Tank. Two months ago we found out that Think Tank was to return this September. We recently released the news that Top Cow Productions had CANCELLED the continuation of Think Tank. Here at The Nerdery we have gone the extra mile to see what is happening with our favorite weapon-designing genius.

With high reasoning in mathematics, chemistry, and just about any other science you could imagine, the federal government began funding his education at the age of fourteen. Given is intelligence, David graduated high school and college at a very early age, in spite of his apathetic work ethic. Upon his graduation from college, he was recruited to design extremely advanced weapons for DARPA. The slacker genius worked for the government in his own unique way for years, eventually becoming conflicted with the governments’ idea of warfare and the loss of life. Dr. Lorens decides he no longer wants to design weapons for the government and participate in the killing business. As Dr. Lorens is DARPA’s greatest asset, and considered a national security risk, his superiors are not willing to let him leave. The result is a quiet battle between David and those in power above him.

Originally released by Top Cow Productions and Image Comics on August 1, 2012, Think Tank received outstanding reviews. Initially planned to only be four issues, it was extended to twelve shortly after the first issue was released. In July 2013 writer, Matt Hawkins, and artist, Rahsan Ekedal, committed to twenty issues. Hawkins’ writing was, at it’s worst, absolutely riveting. The story is very captivating and leaves you craving more whilst perched on the edge of your seat. Ekedal’s black and white illustrations give you the perfect balance of detail without being cluttered, yet clear and straight-forward without being boring. Last month was meant to be Think Tank’s return to the stands however, we instead received the news of the cancellation. Since The Nerdery heard this news, we’ve been in touch with Top Cow president and Think Tank writer, Matt Hawkins. The official word is good news.

Think Tank will definitely be returning second quarter of 2016 with Vol. 4 entitled Creative Destruction. Be sure to stay tuned to The Nerdery for more developing news on Think Tank.
