In 1989, Nintendo teamed up with Universal Pictures and created The Wizard. The Wizard was a coming-of-age story about a young boy named Jimmy, who became obsessed with going to California after his twin sister drowned. Eventually, he ran away with his brother, Corey, and they soon discovered Jimmy’s innate ability to master video games. They met a girl along the way who convinced Jimmy to go to Los Angeles to a video game competition called Video Game Armageddon. The movie was riddled with Nintendo references, and has been called “a feature-length commercial” by many viewers. Shortly after the movie was released, Nintendo held their first Nintendo World Championships.
The big news for today is this: twenty-five years later, Nintendo will finally be relaunching the Nintendo World Championships. As laid out by Nintendo, the competition will begin on the 30th of May at eight selected Best Buy locations in major cities around the country. The winner of each of these Regional Championships will face-off with each other, along with eight other competitors invited to compete by Nintendo. The Championship will be held during the Electronic Entertainment Expo on the 14th of June in Los Angeles, California. The competitors will take part in a multi-round competition with selected Nintendo games on selected devices. The winner of this event will be crowned the 2015 Nintendo World Champion. The Championship will be available for interested parties to watch online.
The competition will begin at selected Best Buy locations in the following cities:
- San Francisco, CA
- Torrance, CA
- Miami, FL
- Schaumburg, IL
- Maple Grove, MN
- Long Island City, NY
- Dallas, TX
- Tacoma, WA
